So Many Books So Little Time

Volume II of LOVES, LIES, AND TEARS tells the stories of America's First Ladies from 1913 to 1963. Beginning with Ellen Wilson and ending with Jacqueline Kennedy, with the backgrounds of World War I, The Great Depression, World War II and the Cuban crises, it surprises at every turn. Things are rarely what they seem and this book introduces new and astonishing truths. The author spoke at a Malibu Daughters of the American Revolution meeting. She captivated us with her passion and enthusiasm which is felt on every page. I must confess to not being terribly interested in Nora Ephron's new book. How many of us want to be reminded that we remember nothing? Just read it in the past few hours and it was a fun, light-hearted, journey.

Now, on to STEVE JOBS by Walter Isaacson. I have heard it is ponderously long, but should be fascinating, learning of this genius.

Sally's Famous Chili

The whipped honey butter crumbled the cornbread.

She didn't forget the pomegranate seeds to the perfectly dressed spinach salad.

It was evocative, important, unpredictable and I was involved on the emotional ride---all the way. George Clooney is going to win the Academy Award with this one. Academy Award and Golden Globe winning actor, Diane Keaton, has just released her autobiography. The memoir describes her life growing up in Southern California using parts of her Mother's eighty-five journals. Growing up in the same area, myself, I could so easily relate.

"Mexican" Modernism(s) in Los Angeles, 1930-1985

"Gypsy Rose" is a 1964 Chevrolet Impala. It is the ground-breaking car, heralding the profile of low rider vehicles in the custom car arena.

"Project for the Flag of a Mexican Colony," made in 1987, was woven wool with embroidery by the artist, Adolfo Patino.

Part of the fountain and architecture at the Museum of Latin American Art in Long Beach, California, is the site of this exhibit which shows until January 29, 2012.

Reading the, almost, Picasso-esque exploits of Frank Lloyd Wright should have been no surprise. But, it was. The huge personalities of some great artists include their private lives. What a great adventure, learning of Wright and his women!

Wanting to read more of this author, I discovered "The Tortilla Curtain." Again, it gives insights into the lives of those around my own. The story in this book juxtaposes the families living within walking distance of each other who couldn't be more dissimilar. The illegal immigrant family is camping in Topanga Canyon and the American family is living in a soon-to-be gated upscale neighborhood. When their lives touch we discover much about ourselves.

California Art at the Weisman

The hard reflective surfaces of the work of Vasa Mihich best expresses the qualities of the art movement that began in Los Angeles in the 1960's, virtually putting California artists on the international art map.

From his "Triangle..." series, Vasa created this laminated plexiglass sculpture in 1977.

This construction, created in 1983 by John Okulick, is painted wood.

In 1985 Charles Arnoldi created "Impound," with acrylic and branches on plywood.

This exhibition is part of the Southern-California-wide display of contemporary art called "Pacific Standard Time." Showing until December, 2011, it tells the story of the birth of the art scene which rivaled New York in its accomplishments.

The banner mounted at the entrance of the Weisman Gallery at Pepperdine University in Malibu, pictures Billy Al Bengston's acrylic on canvas, created in 1977 and called "Klenator Draculas."

Rhoda-May Adamson Dallas, namesake for Adohr Farms and Malibu ranch heir, has died. She boasted an ideal childhood at California's seaside. Born in 1917, she spent much of her early life in an oceanfront Spanish-style house, boating in the Malibu lagoon and hiking the trails in the Santa Monica mountains.

Further enriching her experience there was being exposed to the creation of the vibrant tiles of the Malibu Potteries, a commercial venture her grandmother founded in 1926. The potteries existed only until 1932, making the exquisite tiles even more rare.

When finishing the first chapter of "March" it was obvious how it won the Pulitzer Prize. It read like poetry. I was, once again, in awe of what an author does.

If you ever wondered why the father in, Alcott's, "Little Women" was rarely present? This book has the answers. In this well-researched work of fiction, the author makes him the main character. While the young women and their mother stay in Concord, Massachusetts, Mr. March is a chaplain, away in the Civil War. The family and other familiar people are imagined in this make-believe story that is both moving and riveting.

When taking our children to the new Los Angeles County Museum of Art at the opening in the early 60's, I would never have thought to have so many memorable returns. This time it was enjoying time with a dear friend.

We stopped in for flatbread at the Renzo Piano-designed Stark Bar with herbs grown in the chef's garden behind the bar and restaurant. Exciting art was in our line of sight everywhere, along with the other interesting art lovers. The constant changes have colored every return.

Bouillabaisse and Art

The couple at the table next to us were from Des Moines, Iowa. They came to to admire the architecture, as Richard Meier had designed their art museum, too. We were glad we took their recommendation and ordered the bouillabaisse...exceptional!

Against the South wall is a part of the installation done by California artist, Alexis Smith. It is entitled "Taste" and covers the walls at the Restaurant at the Getty Center.

"Buck"

"Buck," is the true story of a man who turned his childhood pain into empathy with and, thus, an understanding of horses. The techniques he uses in training horses are so subtle as to seem zen-like. His story was the inspiration for Robert Redford's film called "The Horse Whisperer."

A Beautiful Day at The Getty Center

A trip to The Getty Center now includes sculpture gardens in the usual and new unexpected places.

The stainless steel sculpture by Puryear has been there from the opening. Then came the magnificent bronze by Maillol. Today the painted fiberglass sculpture by Ray surprised visitors as they exited the tram. Entitled "Boy With Frog," it was loaned by the artist and his gallery.

Jan and I had fun with this reflective surface.

The sign cautions to not touch the sculpture.

We didn't and neither did this restful couple.

Frank Stella's, DAMASCUS GATE I, is one of my favorites at the Norton Simon Museum in Pasadena.

The beautiful garden is a mix of landscape and art. Pictured is Aristide Maillol's MOUNTAIN, made in 1937.

Marie-Laure is enjoying Amadeo Modigliani's, PORTRAIT OF THE ARTIST'S WIFE, JEANNE HEBUTERNE, an oil on canvas, from 1918. The portrait head was sculpted by Wilhelm Lehmbruck in 1911 in plaster.

Pablo Picasso painted this oil on canvas entitled WOMAN WITH A BOOK in 1932.

Malibu's Weisman Museum is hosting the first solo show in Los Angeles since the artist's untimely death.

"Interior with Nude Leaving," from 1997, is from a private collection. The exquisite colors invite the viewer to enjoy while trying to decipher the painting's visual puns.

Roy Lichtenstein is pictured at his easel. I was fortunate to have visited this revered Pop Artist in his Chelsea, New York City, studio in the early 1980's.

"Collage for Sower" is from the first brushstroke paintings. They are wry comments on Abstract Expressionism. The gestures seen here are a translation of Van Gogh's famous painting, marrying the two techniques through his unique style.

---Just finished Steve Martin's, "The Object of Beauty." He is so busy being an artistic genius that he doesn't waste any spare words in telling of the heroine's escapades in the glittering New York City art world during it's heyday. It is direct---just like her.

---Having won the National Book Award and being on the NY TIMES bestseller list, "The Mayflower," tells the real story of the Pilgrims. I am really looking forward to reading all the details.

---I love the city of Venice, Italy. "Lucia," is a love story, emerging from the pages of history during the time of Napoleon, placed in that wondrous city.

---This will be a re-read of "The Snowball." The author was given total access to Warren Buffet's life . That access, coupled with extremely good writing, proves a fascinating look into the world of "elephant bumping" with warts and all.

Joan Mitchell, The Last Decade

Yes, that's me, trying to catch my breath after entering this exhibition of Joan Mitchell's large-scaled paintings! There were thirteen of the most powerful and gorgeous works of art imaginable. Luckily, I went to the Gagosian Gallery in Beverly Hills just before the show closed. It was the first time I had ever seen any of these stunning paintings. They will go to their new owners and may never be in the public view again. I only hope that museums may have purchased some of the paintings, so we can always have access to them.

The Rockettes

Some months ago, we dancers went to be the first to dance with the Rockettes on the Santa Monica Pier. We were to win tickets to the Radio City Christmas Spectacular this year. But, when reading the fine print we discovered these were not tickets at all. They were vouchers that we needed to go the the Nokia Theater (some 40 miles away each way) to redeem. Would you have?

When reading Anita Shreve's A CHANGE IN ALTITUDE I was constantly wondering what was happening next and wanting to keep the heroine from her self-destructive actions. In other words, I was really involved.

Shreve's words are beautiful, her settings divine. This saga takes place in Kenya. I now know more about the places and events she describes, but not to the exclusion of my caring for the story or the characters. Having read three of her books, I want more.

Maira Kalman

This was illustrator, author, and designer Maira Kalman's first museum show. Mary-Laure and I met at the Skirball Cultural Center in Los Angeles to see it. It was our first time at the Skirball, and certainly won't be our last.

Kalman is the artist of many covers and drawings for THE NEW YORKER magazine. She is also the illustrator of many books for children and adults. Always true to her own personal style, it enchants as she depicts her viewpoint of contemporary life.

According to the NY TIMES, Kalman's new book, AND THE PURSUIT OF HAPPINESS, investigates our history and the current workings of our democracy. Exemplified by her playful style and rambunctious penmanship, the subject matter becomes all the more meaningful.

Noah's Ark

It is a wonder to experience the Noah's Ark room(s) at the Skirball Cultural Center in Los Angeles...and, plenty of children have discovered it. Many of them were there when we visited. They didn't even notice us, being so involved interacting with the exhibit.

This permanent award-winning exhibit has been the talk of the town. I defy any age to explore the interior of this gigantic ark, filled with animal sculptures, re-purposed from everyday sources, and not be excited.

If you are a child at heart---go. If you know children---take them. This is hands-on experiential art at it's best.

The 1000 Journals Project

Mary-Laure and I chose colored pencils and created our page(s) in a journal selected from the many. Next, the journals will be sent to destinations unknown as this project circulates from one artist's hand to another.

Kate's Royal Ring

Yes, 'tis true---this is a genuine eighteen carat sapphire and diamond ring on my hand. No, I am not engaged to Prince William of the United Kingdom. But it is very like the ring he just gave to Kate Middleton.

We had a special "upstairs" opportunity at the Kazanjian Brothers, jewelers. What fun it was to be in the lovely rooms playing with all the trays of sparkling jewels.

This privilege was arranged by Rich for his mother, Margaret, and me. Rodeo Drive, in Beverly Hills, was being decorated for Christmas. We posed in front the famous fountain with the infamous Southern California faux snow, er...icebergs!

Having lunch at Barney's would have been enough fun!

The Pepperdine University students from the Music and Theater Departments were remarkable in their version of "Hello Dolly." Based on Thornton Wilder's play, THE MATCHMAKER, it is no wonder this talented student production was so professional. Many of the teachers have vast experience in the field and generous support is provided by both The Mary Pickford Foundation and Dorothy D. Stotsenberg of Malibu. Mrs. Stotsenberg's late husband, Edward, was Pickford's certified public accountant for over 40 years and served on the Mary Pickford Foundation Board.

As always, she was there.

I am reading everything I can find by Isabel Allende, Anita Shreve and Jeanette Walls. What amazing story tellers they are (even when they tell their own). Allende's, "Daughter of Fortune," is an absorbing tale taking the main character through perils from Chile to California's gold fields. "The Sum of Our Days," is a no-holds-barred memoir. Speaking of telling it all---Jeanette Walls', powerful book, called "The Glass Castle," is the true story of the author's victory over unspeakable circumstances. After this, and her grandmother's story, entitled "Half Broke Horses," I am so looking forward to reading more from Walls. "Sea Glass," by Shreve, was revealing from a real and historical perspective. I couldn't put it down. All three of these authors present the unique plight of women with insight.

The impresario, Jerry Weintraub, teaches the lessons of creating something from nothing, in his autobiography, "When I Stop Talking, You'll Know I'm Dead." A dear friend has recommended, Dan Brown's, "The Lost Symbol." That's next.

All of the books I have been wishing to read arrived at the same time. I fell into Jeanette Walls', "The Glass Castle," and didn't come up for air until it was finished. This truth-is-stranger-than-fiction memoir kept me in disbelief and awe. It's a hard act to follow. Isabel Allende is up next.

Leap of Faith

Being in the opening night audience of the Broadway-bound musical, "Leap of Faith," was a blessing. Not wanting to give anything away, I just want you to know that you are in for a total theatrical immersion.

All miracles don't happen in church! When experiencing the talent in this production--"it's a miracle"! When seeing unbelievable lighting and scenic effects--"it's a miracle"!

When being transported and changed (yes, even saved) in the theater--"it's a miracle"! It is fated.

It is wonderful knowing that we have the true artist chef, Paul Shoemaker, in our neighborhood . He has opened this new restaurant called Savory. Everyone who loves great food is talking about it.

The decor is wonderfully sophisticated and earthy, belying the emphasis on organic and locally grown foods.

The menu changes daily, depending on the availability of the chef's choices.

For our entree, we had the beef choice of the day, with a sauce so good it was indescribable. In that little pot in the background are the tiniest turnips cooked to perfection. It made my heart sing!

Fashion as Art

The Resnick Pavilion at the Los Angeles County Museum of Art opens to the public on October 2. One of the three exciting exhibits is "Fashioning Fashion: European Dress in Detail, 1700-1915."

Corset, England, c. 1900, Leather and Metal.

Petticoat, China for the Western Market, c, 1785. The silk satin is beautifully embroidered with tiger lilies, indigenous to Asia. The silk fabrics were ordered by the British East India Company.

Dressing Gown, Japan for the Western Market, c. 1885, silk embroidery on crepe. The kimono was cut shorter and wider with a softer sash to accommodate a Western woman. "Yes, that's my dear friend, Chris, checking out the fashions."

Lounging Pajamas, c. 1913, Callot Soeurs, Paris, active 1895-1937. Couturiers such as the Callot sisters were inspired by spectacular Ballets Russes productions in Paris. Any style that questioned gender, such as this, was controversial and innovative. This is my favorite!

Ethnic Art and "old" Hollywood

Being in the company of passionate collectors, artists and art dealers is always a treat for me. Seeing ethnic and contemporary original Aboriginal art in the home of the collectors doubled the experience.

Then, we had lunch and a tour of the Sunset Tower Hotel, completing the Hollywood experience. Truman Capote said of the hotel that "all the scandals that happened happened there."

I am still exhilarated after seeing the ethnic and tribal art and this wonderfully colorful hotel. Seeing the art reinforced the belief that the most universal art of all is that which is the most primitive.

Best Life Guard Stand Art

What a surprise to see students painting graphic designs on life guard stands from Malibu to Palos Verdes. The public art project was entitled "summer of color." This one is one at Zuma Beach, where Christine, Carol and I walk for miles three times a week.

Sweet and Hot Music Festival

If a guest checks in to the airport Marriott Hotel during a Labor Day weekend, they must think Los Angeles is the best city in the world.

The hotel vibrates with sounds of music and dancing.

During the four-day holiday, Jazz, Ragtime, Swing, Big Band and Blues music can be heard from seven stages.

This year's Sweet and Hot Music Festival celebrates 26 years of presenting jazz.

Like the unknowing guests of the hotel, I was grateful to hear the artistry that surrounded me. I continue to be filled by it.

San Francisco Museum of Art

One of the most important collections of contemporary art in the world is on display at the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art. Doris and Donald Fisher collected this magnificent group of 160 paintings and sculptures and Mr. Fisher said, "he only wished that he had collected more."

We, the public, are the lucky recipients of their passions. Previously, the work could only be seen in their offices of THE GAP clothing stores. Through a partnership with this museum, it will be housed here for the next 100 years and beyond.

Shanghai at The Asian Museum

The Shanghai exhibit at The Asian Museum in San Francisco closes September 5, 2010. It is definitely worth seeing, being so educational, exciting and fulfilling. Examples of art from the city's tumultuous times, making history come alive. This exhibit is presented in conjunction with the recent World Exposition in Shanghai.

Sea Glass

Romantic souls are always collecting sea glass. Fashionistas are coveting it for jewelry. This bowl of sea glass, geodes and crystals can be found in my neighbor's home.

Haven't we all, like the book's heroine, been enchanted when collecting sea glass? Having the setting be a dilapidated beach-side mansion was the stuff of novels...especially, during the Great Depression. Hard times were emotionally expressed through all of the character's disparate social and economic classes. Anita Shreve's novel, "Sea Glass" will tug at your heart strings while giving insights into the times. Reading it was a great way to celebrate summer.

A Lovely Luncheon

We were the guest of a best-selling author and an undisputed Malibu goddess. Having meals at her home always feels as though she prepared everything with great love.

So many new tastes...this was our first experience with Israeli couscous laced with figs..., and, shrimp with curry...and, yes, that is steam rising...

...it is nori (seaweed) you are seeing in the upper right hand corner...Dick loved the tandoori naan bread...

...the salmon had been smoked in Alaska... her brother sent it and it arrived just in time for this party...the cucumbers were home grown ...

The sea was rolling in...there was a bowl of sea glass...the candles were lit...truly memorable. The conversation, as always, was spirited.

"Young Frankenstein" the musical

Opening night of Mel Brook's musical at the Pantages Theater in Hollywood was a red carpet affair. The zany, vaudevillian, and naughty show (prepare for fifth grade level humor) was brilliantly performed. "Young Frankenstein" opened to mixed critical reviews on Broadway. This is not high art...or, is it when being done at this level of perfection?

National Dance Day

The newly-created National Dance Day is this coming Saturday, July 31, 2010. If you are in the Los Angeles area and want to participate, learn this dance. There are many sites, locally. Two that might be of interest are The Music Center on Grand from 10 until 12 noon, or the boardwalk between Venice and Santa Monica Beach from 1 until 3 pm. Hope to see you there, dancers!

This great dance was choreographed by Tabitha and Napoleon D'uomo, just for this event.

Great Summer Read

I just finished reading Isabel Allende's, "Daughter of Fortune." Another coming to America story, told from a different perspective, I was constantly reminded of other stories by Gabriel Garcia Marquez and Lisa See. It is a great tale of young love, obsession, and freedom of spirit, as the young heroine travels from Chile to California in the midst of the gold rush.

After many soupy days in a row, Wednesday turned out to be a perfect day for our cruise around the harbor at Marina Del Rey. We were the guest of our colleague in the Malibu Woman's Club and had lunch at the yacht club. I got a turn at being skipper of "Cheers," but, only for a quick photo op.

Luncheon at the House of Lords

Our friend shared memories of a recent luncheon with her family at the House of Lords. We were all so interested to hear that the delicious food was matched by the setting. During the lunch, they wandered out to the terraces to see the water traffic on the Thames. Later in the day, some went via the underground to Nottinghill for a picnic in a park.

Being at the brand-new W HOLLYWOOD hotel for drinks and dinner before theater was like being in New York City. No, better! It is located across the street from the Pantages Theater and over a metro station. It was fabulous...the ambiance, the food, the celebrities (yes, I spotted a few), the adventurous taste, were all exciting. I even avoided a fist fight on the street...very exciting!

"In the Heights"

Last night I saw "In the Heights" and was reminded that I never tire of coming-to-America stories. Adding the theme of "living the dream," made this Tony-award winning musical so energized that the full house was, at times, roaring with their love of the show. It was exciting being in the same audience with them.

Incredibly, the starring actor also wrote the book and lyrics. One of the Associate Producers of the show was from the same Washington Heights area. His high school was the same attended by Alan Greenspan, who was a classmate of Henry Kissinger. Today's alumni hero is the L.A. Dodger, Manny Rameriz. Art reflecting life!

Malibu's Farmer's Market is Back

Oh, what a beautiful day! It started with photographing and selecting fresh fruits and vegetables at the newly-re-established farmer's market. By late afternoon we were with friends at a magical chamber music performance. The musical soirees are part of a series by world-class musicians. The venue was the home of some of the musicians and their children, designed by an architect from the noted Wright family, just for this purpose. In case the talents of the musicians were in question, the awards dotted around the home, including an Academy Award, belied that.

The Help

"The Help" should have been entitled "Help"! It is a heartbreaking story placed in the author's home town, Jackson, Mississippi, in the early 1960s. The author moved away after writing this expose...no wonder.

"South Pacific" in Los Angeles

We were in our third row center seats at the Ahmanson Theater when it opened in Los Angeles. Not a single theatrical moment was overlooked in this Rogers and Hammerstein's revival. The talent and joy was not wasted on us. It will play until July 17, 2010.

After the show we fought the crowds of sports fans there to see the Celtics play the Lakers. But we were determined to have drinks and appetizers at the newly-finished WP24 (standing for Wolfgang Puck 24th floor) in the Ritz Carlton Hotel. It is in the "L.A. Live" area, and, was it ever.

I won!

I'm stoked! After swimming two races in the California State Senior Games, I won two medals. A gold medal in the 25 yard backstroke was won in the novice division. The bronze medal in the 50 meter backstroke advanced division qualifies me to swim for California at the National Senior Olympics in Houston, Texas, in June of 2011. I'm going!

Tomorrow is the big day. I am swimming the backstroke in the 50m and the 25yd races. Since last September I have been swimming one half mile every day, practicing to win another gold medal. Wish me luck.

After finally getting a copy of the much acclaimed documentary, "The September Issue," I watched it three times. It was fascinating to see how one person, Vogues's editor-in-chief, Anna Wintour, can have such an influence on the world of fashion. The September issue shows behind the scenes when creating Vogue's largest ever 2007 Fall fashion issue. It is as much about Grace Coddington, Vogues's creative director, as it is about Wintour. Often seeming like the theater of the absurd, the glamour of it all is totally absorbing.

An "East Roman Basalt Torso of Venus," from the late 2nd or 3rd Century A. D., stands in front of a powerful Edward Dugmore painting from 1956 entitled "Archaic."

Dear friends from Paris and Venice (CA) shared the experience of seeing the art and antiques making it all the more beautiful. As an added treat, we saw a presentation by the distinguished designer, Juan Montoya, on his book, entitled "Integrating Art in Modern Design."
